Harness, Dickey & Pierce, a national intellectual property law firm, is currently seeking an Intellectual Property Systems and Database Administrator. This position may be located in the firm’s offices in Detroit, MI (Troy), St. Louis, MO (Clayton) or Washington, DC (Reston, VA).
This position will provide technical assistance in maintaining, troubleshooting and reporting related to firm databases, patent and trademark web systems, as well as assist in creating and further development in our unique client experience with a window to the clients’ portfolio leveraging the firm’s technology.
Successful candidates will have experience in querying databases and database management for specific data to meet client and attorney requests using SQL and Access (including update queries). Microsoft Access expertise is critical to build environment for repeatable reports and queries (utilizing VBA) as well as large scale data comparisons, discrepancy and exception reporting.
A critical aspect of this position will also be assisting in the deployment of workflow systems and in the analysis and support of the firm’s IT Department in managed deployment of other critical systems.
The introduction of the commercial workflow system is new to the firm; replacing a system that has been in place (and worked well) for many years. The new workflow system will facilitate many different workflows throughout the office. A successful candidate will be responsible for, as a part of a coordinated team effort with attorney and staff, building workflow systems that work for the firm as a whole.
This position requires understanding of complex databases and interrelationships between databases to generate information in easily understood formats. Strongly prefer candidate with prior experience with law firm and intellectual property experience (at least three years).
Qualifications for the position include:
Knowledge of intellectual property law firm operations including critical supporting systems. For example:
· Intellectual Property Docketing Systems (Computer Packages or CPi Preferred)
· Document Assembly (IPDAS Preferred)
· Workflow systems (INTAPP Preferred)
· Accounting (Elite Preferred)
· Microsoft System (Access, Excel, Word)
Bachelor’s degree in computer science or related field and/or Paralegal studies or experience in Intellectual Property a strong plus
Knowledge of patent and trademark prosecution and the relationship between related matters
Knowledge of USPTO PAIR, WIPO, and EP and applicable country law for patent and trademark prosecution
Previous IT experience, preferably a minimum of three years in a law firm Interest in acquiring new technical skills
Confident in training and communicating issues Ability to communicate effectively with clients, attorneys, and staff Strong ability to analyze requests and suggest viable solutions
Ability to prioritize special projects and communicate with requesting parties Understanding of data replication across systems Ability to write efficient and maintainable queries/code Enjoys troubleshooting time sensitive critical issues and working with people
