The Presiding Municipal Judge is appointed by the Mayor and Council. She/he is the chief administrative officer over the City Court operation. Working with a Court Administrator who assists in overseeing court operations, the Presiding Judge will be responsible for a budget of $1.1 million with a staff size of 10 people. The Municipal Judge has jurisdiction over a limited variety of cases. The Municipal Judge presides over misdemeanor crimes and petty offenses committed with the City. Jurisdiction of Goodyear Municipal Court includes all civil traffic, criminal traffic, criminal misdemeanors, juvenile traffic, liquor violations, and City Code violations with the City of Goodyear. The court has concurrent jurisdiction with the Justice Courts on orders of protection, injunctions against harassment, and search warrants. The court also collects bonds, fines, fees, and restitution. The Goodyear Municipal Court is part of the integrated judicial system and serves as the judicial branch of the Goodyear Municipal government and is subject to the administrative authority of the Arizona Superior Court and Arizona Supreme Court.
The position requires a Bachelor's degree or equivalent, current license to practice law in Arizona, valid driver's license and a minimum of five years of experience in a related field.
The ideal candidate will be an experienced and well rounded judicial leader with a minimum of 5 years' experience. Candidates with leadership experience in a role presiding over the court and overseeing court operations in a supervisory capacity are ideally suited for this position. Interested judiciary professionals who are well suited for this exceptional opportunity will possess seasoned judicial temperament demonstrated by a history of applying the law with an understanding of how judicial decisions affect those appearing before the court.
The ideal candidate will possess the ability to communicate with a diverse audience in a calm and courteous manner as well as have the ability to listen and consider what is said on all sides. We are seeking a professional judiciary that has the ability to control proceedings in a manner that seeks to preserve the dignity of all; as well as the tact to ensure proceedings remain civil, efficient and safe for all appearing before the court.
The selected candidate must possess high ethical standards. There should be no doubt regarding their personal or professional ethics. Candidates must possess a demonstrated history of abiding by the ethical principles as outlined in the Arizona Bar Associations – Rules of Professional Conduct.
The next Presiding Judge will possess the highest standards of "Integrity" demonstrated by doing what the law requires even though the course of action is not the popular or political one. Integrity as a judicial leader must include an impeccable record of not being influenced by the identity, race, gender, political status, wealth or relationship of the party or lawyer before the judge.
