Garvey Schubert Barer, a law firm with offices in Seattle, WA; Portland, OR; Washington DC; New York, NY; and Beijing, is seeking an IT Director in the Seattle office. The IT Director serves as the firm’s senior IT leader. Reporting to the Chief Operating Officer, the Director is responsible for ensuring that the firm’s use of technology supports and enables its business strategy. The ideal candidate is a technology leader, an innovative problem solver and a highly capable people and project manager. Ideally s/he has also previously served as the senior IT leader for a complex, distributed professional services firm.
CORE FUNCTIONS Responsibilities include, but are not limited to, the following:
Leadership. Provides leadership and direction to the IT Department. Identifies and plans for the changing needs of the firm. Takes the lead in designing and implementing new strategies and procedures to ensure that the firm’s information services are meeting the needs of the firm and its clients. Builds effective working relationships with the firm’s attorneys and staff and regularly assesses the degree to which the department is meeting their needs.
Management. Hires, trains, and supervises department personnel. Manages to the highest standards of client and internal customer service and establishes business process improvement programs. Promotes a working environment that fosters excellence, high productivity and high morale.
Planning and Project Management. Develops and implements short- and long-term plans for the department that translate firm and department goals into specific, actionable steps. Develops and manages project plans as needed. Manages projects to meet agreed upon schedules and not to exceed approved budgets. Brings structure and predictability to the delivery of IT services while remaining flexible and responsive when circumstances require.
Network Operations. Takes the necessary steps to ensure that the computer and telecommunications systems run smoothly and dependably, including system upgrades, maintenance and back-ups. Develops and implements emergency response and recovery plans in the event of emergencies such as blackouts, fires and earthquakes. Ensures the firm’s security program protects the firm and its clients and meets regulatory requirements while minimizing end user inconvenience.
EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE • Bachelor’s degree in computer science, engineering or a related field • Ten years of progressively responsible IT experience with at least five years in management roles, ideally for a professional services firm • Extensive experience with Microsoft systems and applications as well as VMware • Experience with applications commonly found in law firms (docketing, document management, e-discovery, etc.) preferred • Ability to develop and manage the IT Department budget • Outstanding team building skills and ability to interact with people at all levels of the organization GSB values diversity and is an equal opportunity employer.
