Akin Gump Strauss Hauer & Feld LLP is a leading international law firm with more than 900 lawyers in offices throughout the United States, Europe, Asia and the Middle East. We are currently seeking an energetic, service-oriented Manager of Business Solutions in our Information Technology department, reporting directly to the Director of Information Technology Solutions.
The position will reside in the Washington, DC office and will be responsible for managing a strong team of business systems analysts and supporting the firm’s applications portfolio. The position will be in charge of the applications’ entire life cycle management, both on premise and hosted solutions, of the firm operational.
The experienced candidate is responsible for the architectural design, integration, implementation, and deployment of new Commercial Off The Shelf (COTS) and SaaS (Software As A Service) business systems, upgrade existing business systems, liaison with internal IT teams, business owners, stakeholders and vendors to maintain, support and extend the usefulness of the systems by following industry best practices and principles. Ownership of the services listed in the service catalog, adhering to IT Service Management policies and procedures, establishing quantitative metrics, and conducting periodic service reviews with business owners is one of key responsibilities of the position.
Key responsibilities of this position include:
Leadership, Teamwork & Mentorship
Lead and mentor the team as a lead technical analyst and assume & monitor ownership of the group’s application portfolio.
Provide world-class customer service to the offered services through its life cycle.
Be on the forefront evaluate, test, and procure and tools and applications and/or augment existing services to solve business needs.
Ability to plan and manage the full life-cycle of a complex, multi-phase application integration and implementation projects.
Ensure successful testing, implementation and transition to a production / steady state operating environment and cross train resources as necessary
Communicate status and key business information effectively to both management and internal customers.
Serve as 2nd or 3rd level of escalation help desk support for application services.
Evaluation of application’s feature set according to business needs, requirements, use cases and other reporting needs.
Design and Architecture
Participate in the overall design and architecture of the system by working in conjunction with internal IT teams and vendors to design highly available and scalable systems.
Software Integration & Deployment
Have a keen eye towards all integration points required for the system (data feeds, data flow management, internal, external and public dataset integration using standard APIs).
Application Performance Tuning
Measure relevant metrics by monitoring systems and keep up resiliency and uptime of the systems according to established and approved SLAs (service level agreement) with business owners.
Apply proactive measures to protect, patch, upgrade, and test systems in a timely manner by working closely with business owners.
Software Licensing & Renewal
Have a keen eye towards the existing and future needs of the licensing requirements of users, software, hardware, OS and database servers.
Information Security & Data Governance
Establish, enforce and apply information security requirements with regards to authentication, authorization, encryption standards for data transport and persistence, pass-thru authentication and single-sign on, multi-factor authentication, application access controls, user & role management, audit trail and other security controls. Apply and enforce data governance policies such as data privacy, retention and other regulatory and compliance needs.
Ensure and keep up to date of all necessary documentation for all services
Service Management & Service Reviews
Adept in following ITIL best practices to standardize the evaluation, design, deployment and maintenance of business-facing systems and tools.
Exercise strict discipline is onboarding services to service catalog and manage the assigned services through its life cycle.
Participate in the core functional aspects of service management that includes incident, change, problem and assets.
Mentor and guide the team to assume ownership and conduct periodic service reviews with business owners and stakeholders.
Continuous Improvement and continuous integration.
Bachelor’s degree required (Computer Science or equivalent preferred)
A minimum of seven to ten years of experience in an administrative role
Prior experience in a law firm or other professional services firm preferred
Demonstrated technical knowledge and expertise in the following:
Competent in current Microsoft operating systems
Windows Configuration, Analysis and Engineering
Network Connectivity and Analysis
Software Configuration, Analysis and Implementation
PowerShell scripting to automate tasks
Competent in current Microsoft SQL Server
Server architecture, high availability and DR
Transact SQL code development
Legal COTS Applications
Features and Operational Support
Application Configuration, Implementation and Analysis
Building low-code/no-code solutions using SharePoint, document assembly and other legal expert systems
Ability to work well under pressure, facilitates solutions, and meets deadlines and milestones for assigned projects
Formulate and define scope and objectives for the application / project delivery based on business need
Proven ability to handle multiple priorities and adjust to changing priorities in a professional manner
Strong service orientation and an ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with peers, management, system users and other departmental business partners
Ability to read, comprehend and follow instructions
Ability to develop techniques, standards and assist in the establishment of written procedures for the firm’s Applications Administration Group
Strong analytical, creative problem solving and process improvement skills
Proven ability to maintain and update technical knowledge and skills
Demonstrated ability to maintain high ethical standards and strict confidentiality of all firm information
Monitor, secure, identify and qualify application patches/updates for consideration
Willingness and ability to assume new tasks and responsibilities
Willingness and availability to work during non-standard office hours, including nights and weekends
