The Library Manager is responsible for the overall management and administration of the Houston library, including reporting and analysis duties related to the department. This position provides research, reference, and training assistance to the attorneys and staff and manages the library’s print and electronic collections. This position exercises a moderate to high degree of discretion and independent judgment.
Duties and Responsibilities:
Manage and oversee day-to-day library & research operations in global law firm
Perform legal and non-legal research as needed and provide back-up for research librarians in other offices;
Bill time for research and other work associated with active client matters; coach library team on appropriate billing practices and manage overall profitability of the department
Guide library team in handling all firm research needs including providing point of need assistance, training, and handling access issues such as password management and ERM use
Set priorities and supervise direct report to ensure both daily and long-range responsibilities and objectives are met
Communicate with attorneys and other firm personnel to ensure information needs are being met and resources are being used efficiently and effectively
Oversee centralized invoice processing system and provide monthly budget variance, usage and other reports to management team
Partner with the Purchasing Department and Director of Knowledge Management on all information service renewals; Monitor terms of contracts and license agreement for assigned services to ensure compliance and effective use
Maintain relationships with online vendors and print publishers
Work with Director of Knowledge Management on future planning and the strategic provision of information services
Train and orient newly hired attorneys and other professional staff as needed to the services and resources offered in the Information Services department
Develop and implement marketing and training strategies to promote the department’s services and resources
Keep abreast of new features and technologies as these changes affect legal information service in consultation with the Director of Knowledge Management
Assist Director of KM with writing, compiling, and delivering reports to management as requested
Plan and participate in staff development sessions related to reference sources and developments in information technology
Maintain a national network of peer contacts through membership in professional associations in order to ensure quick retrieval of hard-to-find information
Perform and oversee collection development and library maintenance activities
Manage relationship with filing and outsourced library services for assigned offices
Prepare annual budget and assist with planning
Other responsibilities as assigned
Education and Experience:
Master’s degree in Library or Information Science from an American Library Association Accredited program, JD is a plus
5+ years of experience in a legal or business library, with 3+ years in library management, preferably in a law firm or corporate setting
Experience managing a virtual team and strong knowledge of running a large multi-office library; Demonstrated ability to communicate, educate, coach, direct with and provide leadership to a team
Experience with budget, invoice, and contract management and contract negotiation
Proficiency in Microsoft Office, including Excel, and other common computer applications; including Power BI and other analytical tools
Efficiency and depth of knowledge in using standard legal and business print and electronic resources such as Lexis, Westlaw; Strong understanding of legal content collections and formats including the interconnectivity options between databases
Experience working with Integrated Library Systems including OPACs
Expertise in cataloging, data-management and search methods.
Understanding applications of Electronic Resource Management systems such as Onelog
Flexibility to support attorneys and staff in multiple locations using various communication strategies
Demonstrated ability to work well with peers and to contribute to efforts to further management’s goals
Ability to identify, define and analyze complex library issues and to recommend and implement solutions
Established project and process management and leadership skills; Agile training and experience with process management tools are a plus
Experience developing business goals and leading change management initiatives
Strong and proven written and oral communication skills. Proven ability to communicate to all Firm personnel in formal and informal settings

Supervisory Responsibility – This position has supervisory responsibilities.
Work Environment – This position operates in a professional office environment. In-office hours are expected.
Position Type/Expected Work Hours – This is a full-time position, hours are Monday thru Friday from 8:30 am to 5:30 pm. Evening and weekend work may be required as job duties demand.
Travel – 20% travel is expected for this position.
