Morrison & Foerster LLP, an Am Law 50 law firm with 16 offices worldwide, has an opening for a Database Architect within our Information Technology Department. We particularly welcome applications for our San Francisco, Washington D.C., or New York City offices, but would also be open to applicants interested in working from any of our other U.S. office locations.
The Database Architect is responsible for the architecture, design, deployment and maintenance of database systems within the firm. The successful candidate will coordinate strategies for defining, deploying, and maintaining the firm's internally and externally hosted database infrastructure. Responsibility for the maintenance and up-keep of databases and reporting engines, as well as the vendor management related to such systems, also falls under the scope of the role. We will also look to the Database Architect to be responsible for database engine system support including automating database tasks through scripting and programming languages. The position will also provide day-to-day operation and support for customer's application security, backup, and storage.
Technical Responsibilities include, but are not limited to, the following;
Designs/Creates/Maintains database environments in SQL Server. Maintains architectural diagrams and data flows for critical firm systems.
Lead architect on ETL systems and initiatives involving internal and external data.
Proactively manages and troubleshoots SQL servers in a clustered / multi-region environment.
Maintains data integration with SaaS applications, e.g. ServiceNow, Salesforce.
Makes requested changes, updates, modifications and optimizations to database structure and data.
Leads risk management planning and for RDBMS platforms including business continuity planning, vulnerability management, and alignment with established best practice, e.g. OWASP, NIST, MS Operations Framework, ITIL.
Monitors relational databases to optimize database performance, resource use, and physical implementations of databases; addresses a variety of database integration issues including migration between disparate databases, integration, maintenance/conversion, capacity planning issues, and new applications.
Education and Experience
Four year degree preferred in Information Systems or equivalent.
Senior level experience in designing and supporting database architecture and systems.
Experience with database infrastructure, including MS SQL Server 2012-2019 and Oracle, reporting services, high availability and disaster recovery.
Knowledge of maintenance and up-keep of databases and database systems.
Experience with automating database operations through scripting and programming language, i.e. PowerShell. Experience with R and / or Python running with MSSQL is a plus.
Experience with operation and support of application security, backup and storage of database operations.

Strong project management skills and ability to coordinate multiple complex projects simultaneously.
Strong team management and leadership skills, and the ability to communicate effectively with all levels in an organization.
Vendor management and contract negotiation experience highly desirable.
Strong sense of accountability, taking ownership over projects and responsibilities and resolving issues proactively.
