OVERVIEW: The D. E. Shaw group seeks a senior product manager to join its new Legal Technology team. This team is focused on transforming how the firm’s attorneys work with documents and creating the infrastructure needed for AI-powered capabilities. The role offers a greenfield opportunity to build and scale a high-impact product function, shaping the product management discipline and taking on broader leadership as the team scales.
WHAT YOU'LL DO DAY-TO-DAY:
Own the product strategy and roadmap for attorney-facing systems, partnering with legal, engineering, UX, and AI teams to deliver workflow improvements that reduce friction in document-heavy processes.
Establish the operating model for how Legal Technology builds and ships products globally, including a design-first development approach, structured prioritization practices, and close coordination between U.S. and India-based teams.
Partner directly with senior legal clients to translate complex operational needs into clear product direction, ensuring leadership engagement at key decision points.
Lead buy-vs.-build evaluations for key systems, analyzing where internal builds offer a clear advantage and where the external market is stronger.
Collaborate with AI and engineering teams to identify where AI-assisted features can meaningfully reduce manual effort.
Build product management discipline within Legal Technology—including prioritization frameworks, backlog management, release planning, and cross-functional coordination—with the opportunity to manage and mentor other PMs as the team grows.
WHO WE’RE LOOKING FOR:
A bachelor’s degree or higher and at least ten years of relevant product management experience, with a proven record of building and delivering high-quality software products.
Experience leading complex product initiatives and building internal platforms, document management tools, or operational software in enterprise, workflow-heavy, or document-centric environments.
Demonstrated ability to manage, mentor, or help scale a product management function is preferred.
Experience with user-centered development practices—including high-fidelity prototyping and iterative end-user feedback—and the ability to bring structure to product development through disciplined prioritization, backlog management, and release planning.
Solid technical fluency and credibility with engineering teams, plus the ability to operate in ambiguity, balance strategy with execution, and drive work to completion with discretion; full-stack exposure is a plus.
Excellent written and verbal communication skills, sound judgment, and the ability to translate the needs of non-technical users into clear product requirements.
